IT’S MESSY

“Fighting the Right Fights, the Right Ways”
Pastor Doug Heisel – May 22, 2022

There is conflict we cannot FIX and we must trust the Lord with it.

There is conflict we must not AVOID and our engagement is essential.

See the tragic story of David and his family. (2 Samuel 13-18)

2 Samuel 18:33 — The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept. As he went, he said: "O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you--O Absalom, my son, my son!"

Lessons From a Dark Season in David’s Life

  1. Fight to build a team of godly RELATIONSHIPS around you where you choose your church, your advisors, and your close friends wisely. Then, fight with them and for them and stay COMMITTED to them.

Proverbs 13:20 — Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble.

Proverbs 17:17 — A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.

  2. Seek God’s ongoing help, direction, and wisdom, and then fight to personally follow His WILL and WAYS rather than conforming to culture.

Proverbs 3:5-6 — Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.

  3. Parents, fight for the hearts of your kids by having courage to give loving DISCIPLINE to those who are younger, godly COUNSEL to those who are older, and always leading in WORSHIP, not just winning at WORK.

2 Kings 1:6 — Now his father, King David, had never disciplined him at any time, even by asking, “Why are you doing that?”

2 Samuel 18:18 — During his lifetime Absalom had taken a pillar and erected it in the King’s Valley as a monument to himself, for he thought, “I have no son to carry on the memory of my name.” He named the pillar after himself, and it is called Absalom’s Monument to this day.

  4. Fight to keep TRUSTING the goodness of God and model His RECONCILIATION to others.

Psalm 145:18-19 — The Lord is righteous in all His ways and faithful in all He does. The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear Him; He hears their cry and saves them.
